There is always, ALWAYS a way forward. Over the past 30 years, I've lost family members to suicide. Most recently, I lost another family member took her own life in the last year. Those losses stay with you. They leave you wondering if there was something you could have said, something you could have noticed, or a way you could have helped. I’m told by professionals this is an entirely normal and appropriate response, and I believe it because we are all instilled with a relational bent to care, because we do and should … value life. I remember being a teenager when a man I looked up to took his own life. It completely shook me. I was angry, confused and heartbroken. In a way, I think I still am. Looking back, one thing I've come to realise is that many people struggling with depression and mental health challenges are often starving for genuine connection, especially when “The Black Dog” shows up. They don’t necessarily want advice. Not answers. Just someone who cares enough to sit with them, listen, and remind them they're not alone. That's why Movember means so much to me. Because conversations matter. A phone call matters. Even a text matters. Taking a few minutes to ask, "How are you really doing?" matters. More than 720,000 people die by suicide each year around the world. Every one of those lives is someone's son, daughter, brother, sister, parent, friend or colleague. Let's keep the awareness going. Let's keep reaching out. Let's keep making time for one another. You never know when a conversation, a coffee, a prayer or simply being present might be the thing that helps someone take the next best step forward.
