"Somebody loses their somebody every day//But you'll never really know what it's like until it happens to you"
- Until It Happens To You, Sasha Alex Sloan
Mental health overall needs to be destigmatised; we all know this, but we're too scared to do anything about it. We take the time out of our days to listen to someone give a speech about someone's so-and-so who tragically lost their lives, and then we get back to our none-to-fives once lunch hour is over.
Then suddenly it's you either living with someone in that terrible situation, or you're living in it yourself.
Someone very close to me has been battling with his mental health for a long time, before I even knew him. Over the last six months, it has been heart-breaking to see him try to go through everything by himself, as he felt no one could help him and so would never reach out. I cannot even imagine what he's been going through, how he feels and just how futile everything must seem to him.
He's just shy of his 18th birthday - too young and too soon, should he follow through with his plans.
All 60 men per minute is too soon, regardless of age.
I'll be running 60km over the course of November (more if I can manage it!) so that next year, more people will be aware of the issue and the stigma will be that little bit less prevalent in society. Feel free to follow along with me, and please donate if you can!
